| Syngenta Announces Registration of 1 Litre Application Rate for Primextra® II Magnum® |
|
Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, Inc. is pleased to announce the registration of a new use pattern of 1 litre per acre for Primextra® II Magnum® as part of a planned yield management program with Touchdown® Total for corn. This new lower use rate for Primextra provides additional rate flexibility, which means that growers can select the best labeled Primextra rate for their field conditions.
Primextra II Magnum, the preferred annual grass herbicide, provides consistent residual weed control with complete crop safety from its patented safener, benoxacor. Other existing registered rates for Primextra II Magnum are 1.2 L per acre for light weed infestations, 1.4 L per acre for medium weed infestations, and 1.6 L per acre for heavy weed infestations.
The lower rate for Primextra II Magnum will provide weed suppression throughout the critical crop establishment phase in corn and is to be used in a planned program with a post-emergent herbicide such as Touchdown Total in a glyphosate tolerant corn system.
“An early application, or a ‘Foundation Acre™’ application, of Primextra is an important part of a yield management program,” says Wayne Bennett, Brand Manager-Eastern Business Region, Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, Inc. “By using this new rate of Primextra pre-emergently, followed by an in-crop application of Touchdown Total, growers can ensure their herbicide program adds to their yield goals.”
The Foundation Acre application of Primextra prevents the pre-conditioning that occurs when plants sense the presence of weeds. Studies conducted by Dr. Clarence Swanton at the University of Guelph demonstrate that plants begin altering their growth pattern as soon as they detect any weeds. This results in a compromised root structure, along with reduced total plant biomass and leaf area.
“The Foundation Acre approach is about ensuring that when your corn plants are emerging they put energy towards root and shoot development which at the end of the day allows your corn to get the best possible start,” explains Bennett. “More and more growers of both conventional and glyphosate tolerant corn systems are spraying Primextra early as a foundation for their yield management strategy.”
