Aphanomyces lurks wherever peas and lentils grow
16 nov 2021
First – some bad news: the pathogen that causes Aphanomyces root rot, A. euteiches, is always present in your soil. Early season conditions – like high soil moisture caused by excessive rain – will often play a key role in how severe the disease will be in your peas and lentils.
Early Aphanomyces infections can cause plants to die off prematurely, resulting in heavy yield losses. Later season infections delay crop maturity, which not only impacts harvest timing, but can cause severe lodging.
Researchers have also found that Aphanomyces reduces pod size, seed number and seed quality. Suffice to say, it’s always best to steer your lentil or pea crop clear of the most devastating Aphanomyces effects.
Protecting your pulses
Vibrance® Maxx with INTEGO® is a convenient seed treatment co-pack that offers all the seed and seedling disease protection of Vibrance Maxx RFC, with added Aphanomyces protection for your peas and lentils.
Vibrance Maxx with INTEGO® helps protect your plants while they are getting established, and through tough, high moisture conditions. This protection results in larger plants with greater root mass that can better withstand potential later-season infections.
Vibrance Maxx with INTEGO® field performance
In a series of field trials conducted in Saskatchewan and Alberta in 2021, Vibrance Maxx with INTEGO® delivered a clear improvement over competitor seed treatments in reducing root rot severity and incidence.

In addition to seed treatments, scouting, keeping good field histories, soil sampling, crop rotations and cover crops, can all help to manage Aphanomyces root rot.
Keep in mind that Aphanomyces can remain present in the soil for up to 12 years, so rotations on their own are not effective.
Performance evaluations are based on internal trials, field observations and/or public information. Data from multiple locations and years should be consulted whenever possible. Individual results may vary depending on local growing, soil, and weather conditions.
