Hensall Co-Op Acquires Manitoba Dry Bean Facility



Hensall Co-Op is expanding in Manitoba.

Based north of London, ON, the Co-Op announced Friday it has acquired ILTA Grain Inc’s. edible bean processing plant located at Bloom, Man. including satellite receiving at Miami, Man. The facility has the capacity to process up to 40,000 tonnes of dry beans into various pack sizes.

Financial details of the deal were not released.

“We are very pleased to expand our manufacturing footprint in bean processing with this high quality, well managed facility” Joey Groot, Hensall Corporate Operations Manager, said in a release.

“Our product is so highly sought after around the globe that we have been running above capacity at our current facility in Hensall, ON. We are very fortunate to find an opportunity to grow our capability while giving us access to experienced and valued employees, improving our logistics stream and reducing risk by diversifying our manufacturing footprint. Being within 20 kilometres of our existing operation in Rignold, Manitoba is an added bonus.”

Founded in 1937, Hensall Co-op is the eight largest non-financial co-operative in Canada with over 6,000 member-owners and 30 owned locations in Ontario and Manitoba.

“The global demand for plant-based proteins will continue to increase and Hensall Co-op will continue to be a part of that growth” added Derwyn Hodgins, Commercial Business Manager of Hensall Co-op. “Having a facility in Bloom, Manitoba expands our food grade product portfolio and improves our responsiveness in the global marketplace, providing us the opportunity to expand into new geographies.”

The acquisition of the Bloom facility is expected to provide an immediate springboard to continue the growth of Hensall dry bean export programs, said Peter Dinsmore, Chair of the Hensall Board of Directors.

The facilities will be referred to as Hensall Co-op Bloom and Hensall Co-op Miami.
