[Scene opens with a shot of wind blowing through a soybean field with the Soy Masters badge overlaid on it. Guitar music plays in the background. Scene switches to Eric standing in a field, speaking to the camera.] ERIC: Hello my name is Eric Richter, Agronomic Service Manager for seeds with Syngenta Canada, and today I'd like to talk with you about stand assessment in soybeans. At Syngenta, we really feel that establishing a strong, uniform soybean stand is important for growers trying to achieve (1) high yields, and (2) profitable soybean production. [Scene switches to a shot of a soybean field with wind blowing through it.] ERIC: So, in this video for soybean stand establishment, we'll look at five critical steps. [Scene switches back to Eric in the field speaking to the camera.] ERIC: The first one is around determining your optimum populations that you're going to plant your soybean crop at. [Scene switches to shots of planting soybeans in the field. Then it goes back to Eric in the field.] ERIC: The second one, then, is determining what those actual counts are once the crop is up. The third one is documenting what we call the gap or the attrition rate between seeds planted and the final count or the final stand. The other two are in the row. [Scene switches to closeup of emerging soybean seedlings ERIC: We want to look at the uniformity of the plant seedling staging, and the second one is looking at the distribution of those seedlings within the row, and striving for that picket fence. [Scene switches back to Eric in the field, speaking to the camera.] ERIC: By completing these activities, focusing on the five points that I've mentioned, will help growers benchmark their stand establishment - really document where they've been successful and the areas that they've had some weaknesses. But it is important as a best management practice - stand establishment's so critical in growing that best crop. What I'd like to do now is dig a little deeper into each one of these components.
