[Scene opens with a shot of young soybean rows with crusted soil. The Soy Masters badge and "Field Notes" overlaid on it. Drum and guitar music plays in the background. The text "Soil Crusting" shows. Scene switches to Bryce standing in a field, speaking to the camera.] BRYCE: Another consideration we have to watch out for in a lot of soils in Western Canada is soil crusting. Oftentimes after we get a heavy rain in heavy textured soils, we can get a layer above the developing seedling that crusts over. [Scene switches to a closeup of a hand picking up chunks of crusting soil.] BRYCE: While soybeans have an ability to really push through a lot of dense soil, it can often lead to irregular growth and mortality of that seedling that's unable to push through that crust. [Scene switches back to Bryce standing in the field, speaking to the camera.] BRYCE: Now to reduce crusting, we want to watch some of the activities that we do above it. So the first one that we want to watch is just how deep we're planting. [Scene switches to a still image of a planter in the field.] BRYCE: If we are in a really heavy textured soil, I know sometimes it's really hard not to chase that moisture down to plant into to help with that even inhibition of seed. [Scene switches back to Bryce standing in the field, speaking to the camera.] BRYCE: But often it can lead to this crusting above it when it's in the ground for a longer period of time. [Scene quickly shows a closeup of a hand inspecting a plant in crusting soil. It then switches back to Bryce in the field.] BRYCE: Another other thing is that we've got to watch when we roll and how we roll. There's a lot of different options for rolling. We can roll before, immediately after seeding, or after emergence of the beans. So we have a few options to play with. If you have just seeded your beans and it's still fairly wet on top and we have a very heavy textured clay soil, it may be best to wait for all those seedlings to come above the ground so that we're not packing that heavy, dense clay soil on top of that seed. [Scene changes to a white screen with the Soy Masters badge. Guitar music plays in the background.]
