Crop Safety

As mesotrione is a selective herbicide, it affects corn plants differently than weeds. Corn's tolerance to mesotrione is excellent, primarily due to the rapid breakdown of the herbicide into inactive metabolites. Thus, corn has the ability to metabolize mesotrione much quicker than the target weeds.

Mode of Action

Callisto contains the active ingredient Mesotrione.  Once absorbed by the target weed, mesotrione quickly moves to its site of action in the cytoplasm of the chloroplasts. Mesotrione inhibits an essential plant enzyme called HPPD (p-hydroxyphenyl pyruvate dioxygenase) that is found primarily in the cytoplasm of the chloroplasts.

Disruption of pigment synthesis causes bleaching symptoms in susceptible plants that leads to necrosis and plant death. Visible symptoms of weed injury include bleaching of foliage and growing points.

Typically, following a post-emergent application, visual symptoms appear 3-5 days after application with weed death occurring within 2-3 weeks. However, weeds stop competing with the crop soon after application.
