Canadian farmers did not stray far from original oat and barley planting intentions.
The Statistics Canada acreage report on Friday pegged national barley area at 6.135 million acres, down from the federal agency’s March estimate of 6.28 million and 4.2% below a year earlier. Meanwhile, oat area was reported at 2.996 million acres, up slightly from 2.978 million in March and a 3.3% increase from 2024.
Barley area fell below the average pre-report trade guess of 6.6 million, while oat acres were close to the average trade expectation of 3 million.
Barley area in Saskatchewan is now estimated at 2.253 million acres, down from March intentions of 2.398 million and below the 2.313 million acres planted a year ago. Alberta barley area, at 3.304 million acres, was little changed from March and down from 3.505 million in 2024, while Manitoba barley acres increased to 309,400 from March intentions of 297,900 but remain below 311,200 last year.
Saskatchewan oat area was pegged at 1.285 million acres in today’s report, compared to intentions of 1.304 million and 1.263 million in 2024. At 839,900 acres, Alberta oat area ticked slightly higher from intentions of 837,000 and remains up from 789,300 a year ago. Manitoba producers reported 555,900 acres of oats, up from 522,700 acres in 2024.
