Alberta major crop conditions have improved markedly from a week earlier but are still below average.
Friday’s provincial crop report pegged the overall condition of major crops (spring wheat, barley, oats, canola, and dry peas) at 59% good to excellent as of Tuesday, up 10 points on the week but down from the five- and 10-year averages of 73% and 71%.
Most areas across the province received 2–10 mm of precipitation this past week, the report said. The Peace region saw the heaviest amounts, with widespread rain of 30–50 mm and some locations exceeding 45 mm. The North West and North East regions received 2–15 mm, with some isolated areas up to 30 mm. Some parts of the Central Region recorded 2–10 mm, while the South remained the driest, with most areas under 10 mm.
Rainfall over the week led to “noticeable improvements in soil moisture reserves across all regions,” the report said. However, surface and sub-surface moisture levels rated good to excellent remain below the 5- and 10-year averages in all areas. Provincially, surface moisture stood at 37% good to excellent as of Tuesday, up 17 points from a week earlier.
On an individual crop basis, the condition of the provincial spring wheat and barley crops each improved 9 points on the week to 60% good to excellent as of Tuesday, with the oat crop up 7 points to 58%. The condition of the canola crop jumped 13 points to 58% good to excellent, and peas were up 8 points at 60%.
Regionally, major crop conditions improved to 7 points on the week in the South Region to 55% good to excellent, with the Central Region up 20 points to 72%. The North East was up 7 points to 65%, and the North West was up 24 points to 73%. Peace Region major crops were rated 25% good to excellent, down 2 points from the previous week.
