About this Product

Protect your potato crop from early season insect pests.

An application of Actara® insecticide on your potato seed pieces or in furrow at planting is what your crop needs for early residual protection. Once inside the plant, Actara slowly metabolizes, delivering long-lasting protection into the growing season.

Actara should be used in combination with a registered fungicide potato seed treatment such as Maxim® D, Maxim PSP or Maxim MZ PSP to protect potato seed from early season diseases.

Product Benefits

  • Rapid uptake by potato roots for fast acting protection
  • Systemic mode of action provides long-lasting, fast acting control of chewing and sucking pests

Packaging

One case contains 2 x 2.04 L jugs.

Applied to seed, one case treats 8.4 – 10.9 ha (20.75 - 26.9 ac) worth of seed and rates to be applied per cwt of seed are determined by seeding rate in cwt / acre.

In furrow, one case treats 8.4 – 10.9 ha (20.75 - 26.9 ac) with 36” row spacing at 3.4 – 4.4 mL of product / 100 m of row.

Uses

For use on:

  • Potatoes

Refer to the label for a complete list of crops.

For management of:

Potatoes:

Refer to the label for a complete list of crops and pests.

Application Information

Use Rates

Potatoes:

  • Seed treatment: Apply no more than 488 mL/ha (197.6 mL/ac)
  • In-furrow: Apply 3.4–4.4 mL/100 m of row
  • At the registered high rate, one jug of Actara treats 10 acres

Refer to the label for a complete list of rates for all crops and pests.

Water Volume

Applied to seed the final slurry volume should be 65 – 130 mL/cwt. Lower application volumes may be possible as long as coverage is thorough especially when contact/protectant fungicide treatments are being tank mixed with Actara.

Applied in furrow the slurry volume should be between 40 – 50 L/ha (4.25 – 5.35 US gal/ac).

Application Method

Ground, Seed Treatment

Application Information

Potatoes:

  • Apply either as an in-furrow treatment during planting or on the seed piece prior to planting.

Refer to the label for complete application details for all crops and pests.

Mixing Order

WALES Symbol: L

For in-furrow application:

  1. Add 1/2 of the required amount of water to the mix tank.
  2. With the agitator running, add Actara 240SC and tank mix partner, if appropriate, to the tank.
  3. Continue agitation while adding the remainder of the water.
  4. Begin application of the solution after Actara 240SC has completely dispersed into the mix water. Maintain agitation until all of the mixture has been applied.

Prepare no more spray mixture than is needed for the immediate operation. Thoroughly clean application equipment before using this product. Vigorous agitation is necessary for proper dispersal of the product. Maintain maximum agitation throughout the spraying operation. Do not let the spray mixture stand overnight in the spray tank. Flush the spray equipment thoroughly following each use and apply the rinsate to a previously treated area. Keep product container tightly closed when not in use.

For seed piece application:

Shake or mix well before using.

Apply only in areas with adequate ventilation or in areas that are equipped to remove spray mist or dust.

Apply Actara 240SC as a water-based slurry utilizing standard slurry seed treatment equipment which provides uniform seed coverage.  Uneven or incomplete seed coverage among seed pieces may not give the desired level of insect control. Thoroughly mix the recommended amount of Actara 240SC into the required amount of water for the slurry treater and dilution rate to be used. Follow the manufacturer’s application instructions for the seed treatment equipment being used. Maintain constant agitation of the slurry during the treatment.

Use Restrictions

Potatoes:

  • Do not use more than one application of Actara on seed or in furrow per season
  • Do not follow a soil application of Actara with a foliar application of any Group 4 insecticides

Refer to the label for a complete list of use restrictions for all crops.

Tank Mixes

There are no registered tank mixes for this product. Application of UNLABELLED tank mixes is permitted by PMRA (Pest Management Regulatory Agency) as long as both products are registered and being used within their registered use pattern (i.e. application rate, application timing, number of applications per season, pre-harvest interval, pest claim, etc.).

Mode of Action

The active ingredient in Actara 240SC is thiamethoxam.  Thiamethoxam is a second-generation neonicotinoid. In rigorous third-party trials, thiamethoxam went head-to-head with its leading competitor, imidacloprid, and offered greater protection to new growth because of its faster uptake and longer residual.

Thiamethoxam interferes with a unique receptor site in the insect’s nervous system, the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It has both contact and ingestion activity. Insect feeding will stop within hours of contact or ingestion and insect death occurs within 24 – 48 hours.

Resistance Management

DO NOT apply any subsequent application of a Group 4 Insecticide following treatment with a seed treatment or soil application of Actara 240SC.

For resistance management, please note that Actara 240SC contains a Group 4 insecticide (neonicotinoid class of chemistry). Any insect population may contain individuals naturally resistant to Actara 240SC and other Group 4 insecticides.  The resistant individuals may dominate the insect population if this group of insecticides is used repeatedly in the same field.  Other resistance mechanisms that are not linked to site of action but are specific for individual chemicals, such as enhanced metabolism, may also exist. Because resistance development cannot be predicted, the use of this product should conform to sound resistance management strategies established for the crop and use area.

To delay insecticide resistance:
Where possible, rotate the use of Actara 240SC or other Group 4 insecticides with different groups that control the same pests in a field. Use tank mixtures with insecticides from a different group when such use is permitted.

Insecticide use should be based on an IPM program that includes scouting, record keeping, and considers cultural, biological and other chemical control practices.

Monitor treated pest populations for resistance development.

Contact your local extension specialist or certified crop advisors for any additional pesticide resistance-management and/or IPM recommendations for the specific site and pest problems in your area.

For further information or to report suspected resistance, contact company representatives at 1-87-SYNGENTA (1-877-964-3682).
