Nitrogen is an essential nutrient but can also be the most yield-limiting for cereal crops. More important than ever for increasing yields and profits, nitrogen is the single most costly, yet responsive nutrient that can be applied to cereals.

Simply applying nitrogen to cereals doesn’t mean the crop can take advantage of the much-needed nutrients and deliver results. Nitrogen is susceptible to leaching and volatilization that directly impacts the availability of the nutrient for crop uptake.

Cereal nutrition needs

  • Nitrogen enables photosynthesis, promotes tillering and builds protein in the grain.
  • A shortage of nitrogen will significantly reduce yield and make the crop more susceptible to diseases.
  • Potential yield loss begins well before visual symptoms appear.

Timing matters

  • Maximum nitrogen uptake in cereals occurs after tillering and before flowering and establishes yield potential.
  • Nitrogen availability at stem elongation or flag leaf emergence is critical for reaching high yield and grain protein.
  • Cereal crops benefit from a continuous source of nitrogen, increasing the yield and grain protein potential.

Source additional nitrogen all season long

  • Envita® is a nitrogen-fixing biofertility product that provides cereals with an additional source of nitrogen, supplementing fertilizer treatments. This ensures nitrogen is available in the right place at the right time – all season long.

How Envita works

  • Envita features the bacteria Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus (Gd) – a naturally occurring food-grade bacteria that enables a unique mode of nitrogen fixation in wheat and other crops.
  • After an Envita application, the bacteria start replicating and spreading through plant foliage forming a beneficial relationship with the host plant.
  • The bacteria fix nitrogen from the air right inside the plant cells, where nitrogen is needed most for growth and yield. This provides plants with an additional source of nitrogen where and when it’s needed, supplementing the supply of nitrogen available from fertilizer treatments.
