thrips on onion
This article was published in 2022 and updated Oct 2024 with new information.

As the temperatures heat up this summer, keep an eye out for thrips. Thrips don’t start in every field equally so take the time to check each field for thrips! If you spot them, it could mean it’s time for a Minecto® Pro fungicide application.

In 2021, Minecto Pro was registered as a tool to manage thrips in bulb vegetables. The Group 6 and 28 insecticide offers activity against both nymphs and adults.

When to apply Minecto Pro

Time your Minecto Pro application for when thrips are at threshold for your field. It should be applied at a rate of 0.32 L/acre. Remember to include MSO (0.25% v/v) in the tank with Minecto Pro.
Make a second application of Minecto Pro if thrip counts increase and you’re still in the same generational window.

What is a generational window?

The number of days of a generational window is the number of days it takes the pest to go through one generation (egg to adult), or the number of days that a single insecticide application is effective, whichever is longest. If the generation time is unknown, assuming a 15 day generational window for onion thrips is appropriate If you have moved onto a new generational window.

If you have moved to a new generational window, consider a different group of insecticide than those in Minecto Pro (Group 6 and 28) for best resistance management practices.
