Canadian Pacific Kansas City moved a record 30.66 million tonnes of Canadian grain and grain products during the 2025-26 crop year, surpassing its previous annual high set five years earlier, the railway announced Tuesday.
The railway said the latest total exceeded the former record from 2020-21 by approximately 72,500 tonnes. Volume was also 11% higher than in the previous crop year, 16% above the three-year average and 20% above the five-year average.
“Our team of exceptional railroaders reliably delivered the largest Canadian grain crop in history with consistency throughout the crop year,” John Brooks, CPKC executive vice-president and chief marketing officer, said in a release.
The railway established quarterly records for Canadian grain transportation during both the first and second quarters of 2026. It also set monthly records in January, February, April, May, and June.
CPKC said continued investment by railways, grain companies and terminal operators has expanded capacity and improved the efficiency of grain movements. Customer investment in elevators capable of handling 8,500-foot trains, combined with spending on railway infrastructure, equipment and operations, has allowed larger and more efficient trains to move through the system.
Elizabeth Hucker, CPKC vice-president of sales and marketing for bulk commodities, said the investments are strengthening end-to-end supply-chain performance and helping Canadian grain reach domestic and international markets more safely and reliably.
The railway said it expects to maintain the momentum during the 2026-27 crop year by using its North American network to provide grain shippers with expanded routes and access to additional markets.
CPKC released its 2026-27 Grain Service Outlook Report on July 31. The report outlines the railway’s plans for equipment, network capacity and service during the new crop year, with an emphasis on maintaining safe and dependable grain transportation.
