G.S. Dunn Expansion to Boost Prairie Mustard Purchases

A major expansion by G.S. Dunn Ltd. will sharply increase the company’s purchases of Prairie-grown mustard as it ramps up production at its Bow Island milling facility.

The $30-million project, supported by a $3.1-million Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit (APITC) from the Alberta government, will raise annual raw mustard seed purchases to $44 million from $13 million — all sourced from Western Canada. The expansion has also already opened access to two new export markets in Japan and South Korea.

The Bow Island expansion is the second phase of G.S. Dunn’s value-added mustard milling project. Since its initial expansion into Alberta in 2019, the company has increased capacity by more than 200%. The current phase has increased processing capacity by approximately 70% compared to pre-expansion levels.

“Investors continue to choose Alberta as a place to establish roots, grow and expand because it makes good business sense,” RJ Sigurdson, Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, said in a release last week. “The Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit is just one of the ways our government commits to creating ideal conditions for businesses while attracting investment, diversifying the economy and creating more jobs for Albertans.”

Daniel Bouillon, chief financial officer of G.S. Dunn Limited, called the new Bow Island mill a “state-of-the-art facility” and credited the collaboration between the provincial government, the town, and local construction partners. “We look forward to continuing to strengthen the agri-processing industry in southern Alberta together with our local mustard grower partners,” he said.

The APITC program offers a 12% non-refundable tax credit to companies investing at least $10 million to build or expand a value-added agri-processing facility in Alberta. So far, 19 corporations and two partnerships have applied, representing $1.76 billion in new agri-food investment across the province.

Founded more than 150 years ago and headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario, G.S. Dunn is the world’s largest supplier of milled mustard products, distributing to more than 130 customers in over 70 countries. The company entered Alberta after purchasing and retrofitting the former Spitz sunflower seed plant at Bow Island.

In its September crop production report, Statistics Canada estimated 2025 Canadian mustard production at 141,000 tonnes, down almost 27% on the year.
