Large Canadian Corn, Soy Crops on the Way

Canada is on track to harvest its largest corn crop on record this year, while the soybean crop could be the biggest since 2018.

Monday’s Statistics Canada crop production report put the national corn crop at 14.824 million tonnes, up from 13.983 million a year earlier and potentially shattering the previous high of 14.19 million notched in 2013. Meanwhile, the soybean crop was estimated at 6.381 million tonnes, up from 6.271 million last year and the largest since the 2018 harvest of 7.416 million.

At 172.6 bu/acre, the average forecasted Ontario corn yield is actually down from last year’s 175.2 bu, not surprising given the dryness some parts of the province were faced with earlier in the growing season. However, production is still seen rising 3.4% to 9.804 million tonnes – the biggest provincial crop ever - due to a larger planted and harvested area.

The Manitoba corn crop is estimated at 1.276 million tonnes, an increase of 44.6% from a year earlier as the average provincial yield is seen rising to nearly 132 bu/acre from 95.5 bu in 2021.

Forecasted 2022 Ontario soybean production is projected little changed on the year at 4.08 million tonnes, as a decline in the average yield to 49 bu/acre from 51.6 bu is largely negated by a small uptick in acreage.

The Manitoba soy crop is pegged at 1.1 million tonnes, a relatively modest 13.6% gain from 2021, as a nearly 9 bu/acre improvement in the average yield to 35.9 bu is offset by a smaller planted/harvested area.

The production estimates contained in today’s report were derived using satellite imagery and agroclimatic data and represent crop conditions as of late July. StatsCan will release updated production estimates using the same model-based method later in September, before releasing its final numbers in December, based on farmer surveys.
