Total March 31 stocks of most Canadian pulse and special crops were up from a year earlier, with lentils and peas hitting the highest on record.
A grain stocks report released Wednesday by Statistics Canada showed total on-farm and commercial stocks of lentils at the end of March at 2.376 million tonnes, more than double the 1.048 million tonnes on the same time last year. That also easily topped the previous March 31 high of 1.697 million tonnes notched in 2019.
Total March 31 pea stocks were reported at 2.505 million tonnes, up 84.7% from a year earlier and beating the earlier high of 2.259 million in 2018.
At 370,000 tonnes, March 31 stocks of chickpeas were also the highest on record, rising 106% from a year earlier and more than triple the March 31, 2024 level of 95,000.
At 228,000 tonnes, total canary stocks as of March 31 were up 66.4% on the year and the highest since 2006 at 265,000.
March 31 flax stocks were reported at 380,000 tonnes, compared to 253,000 tonnes the previous year and the highest for the date since 2017 at 417,000.
Mustard stocks came in at 200,000 tonnes, little changed from 199,000 on March 31 a year earlier but up from 133,000 two years ago.
