The Ontario soybean harvest and winter wheat planting made rapid progress this past week amid excellent fall conditions.
Grain Farmers of Ontario’s latest field progress estimates show the provincewide soybean harvest was 31% complete as of the end of September, up sharply from just 4% a week earlier. Winter wheat planting also surged, reaching 36% complete compared with only 5% the previous week.
According to the latest GFO field observations, wheat seeded earlier in September is beginning to emerge, although increasingly dry conditions in some areas are slowing emergence.
Most of Ontario received rain on Thursday and Friday of this week, but sunny weather is expected to return for the weekend and through much of next week.
Corn, meanwhile, continues to mature and dry down, but widespread harvest still appears to be several weeks away. Some high-moisture corn harvest is underway, while many fields remain very green. Seasonably warm temperatures and sunny conditions are expected to support continued natural dry down.
Many areas of Ontario have so far avoided a killing frost, although frost has already occurred in some parts of the province, including hard frost in northern areas. More widespread hard frosts are likely during October, the report said.
Disease is also becoming a concern in some corn fields. Gibberella ear rot, which can produce the mycotoxin DON, is being reported as an emerging issue as the crop approaches harvest.
