Ontario Soy Harvest Well Advanced; Corn Harvest Just Underway

The Ontario soybean harvest is well advanced and winter wheat planting is nearly complete, while the provincial corn harvest is still in its early stages.

According to the latest field observations from Grain Farmers of Ontario on Thursday, the soybean harvest had reached 82% complete as of Wednesday, up 12 percentage points from a week earlier. Although soybean harvest is nearing completion across much of the province, some producers are still working to bring in later-planted crops. Rainfall and other weather-related delays have also slowed progress in some areas, the report said.

Meanwhile, winter wheat planting advanced 15 percentage points over the past week to reach 96% complete as of Wednesday. Planting is continuing in the deep southwest but is expected to wrap up in the coming days. Favourable fall weather has provided excellent conditions for winter wheat establishment, the report said.

Corn harvest, meanwhile, is slowly gaining momentum but remains well behind the other major field crops.

As of Wednesday, just 5% of Ontario's corn crop had been harvested, up from 1% a week earlier.

High grain moisture levels continue to discourage some producers from beginning the corn harvest, the report said, with moisture readings ranging from 20% to more than 30%. The report cautioned growers to watch for mould development in corn ears following rainfall events over the past several weeks.

Generally mild, dry and sunny weather across much of southern Ontario so far this week has provided near ideal conditions for soybean harvesting, winter wheat planting, and corn drydown. The weekend forecast calls for temperatures mostly in the low to upper teens, with plenty of sunshine in most areas.
