Southwest Monsoon Right on Time in India




The southwest monsoon is right on time in India, officially hitting the southern state of Kerala on June 1, according to a report from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).


The southwest monsoon typically runs from June through September and provides about 75% of the yearly moisture in the country. Kharif crops grown during the rainy season include black gram (urad) and mung beans, while the chickpeas and lentils typically grown during the drier rabi season also benefit from the subsoil moisture provided by the monsoon.


The IMD forecasts normal rainfall during the 2020 monsoon season for the country as a whole, with the northwest part of the country expected to see slightly more precipitation than the long-term average, while northwest may be slightly below the average.


"The forecast is very positive for Indian agriculture," said G. Chandrashekar, senior editor and policy analyst with the Hindu Business Line, while speaking with the Global Pulse Confederation a few days before the official IMD announcement.


He noted that in addition to the normal average rainfall, the spatial and temporal distribution of the precipitation will be important to watch during the season - as the monsoon rains are better when spread out than all at once.


Indian buying of Canadian pulse crops, such as peas and lentils, is highly dependent on the level of its own production. Agriculture Canada is projecting 2020-21 Canadian exports of both lentils and peas will decline from the previous year to 2 million and 3.4 million tonnes, respectively, from 2.2 million and 3.65 million.
