Spring Wheat Condition, Winter Wheat Harvest Progress Push Higher

The condition of the US spring wheat crop ticked higher this past week, while the American winter wheat harvest entered the home stretch.

According to Monday’s USDA crop progress report, 70% of the national spring wheat crop was in good to excellent condition as of Sunday, up 2 points from a week earlier and a massive 60 points better than a year ago when widespread drought was plaguing the northern Plains.

In North Dakota, the condition of the crop came in at 80% good to excellent. The crop in Minnesota was reported at an even stronger 82% good to excellent, while South Dakota’s crop came in at just 58%. The crop in Montana, which has struggled over the past couple of weeks, was seen at only 42% good to excellent.

An estimated 97% of the US spring wheat crop had reached the heading stage as of Sunday, up from 86% the previous week.

The North Dakota crop was 95% headed, behind 99% on average, while Minnesota was at 100% headed.

Meanwhile, the US winter wheat harvest reached 82% complete as of Sunday, up from 77% a week earlier and near 85% on average as the combines continued their push north.

The Nebraska harvest was reported at 92% done, up 8 points on the week but ahead of 88% on average. The Soft Red harvest in Michigan jumped to 85% complete from 68% a week earlier and also ahead of the state average of 83%. In Ohio, the harvest was complete as of Sunday, compared to 96% a week earlier.

Wheat futures were lower on Monday, although this had nothing to do with the development of this year’s crop in the US. The market continues to adjust to the return of Ukrainian grain to world markets. The first ship (full of corn) left the port of Odesa today and more will follow. The Sept Chicago wheat futures moved modestly lower on the news, ending down 7 1/2 cents at US$8.00 1/4.
