U.S. Spring Wheat Harvest Reaches 93% Done, Winter Wheat Planting Inches Forward 


The U.S. spring wheat harvest is nearly complete, with 93% of the crop harvested as of Sunday, according to USDA’s latest crop progress report. 

That was up from 86% a week earlier, slightly ahead of the five-year average of 92%, and equal to progress at the same point last year. 

North Dakota, the largest U.S. spring wheat-producing state, reached 92% harvested, up from 86% the previous week and ahead of its five-year average of 88%. 

Minnesota was 98% complete, edging up from 97% a week earlier and remaining ahead of the 94% average. Montana made strong progress during the week, advancing to 88% harvested from 75%. However, harvest there remained behind the five-year average of 95%. South Dakota’s spring wheat harvest is already complete. 

Meanwhile, planting of the 2027 U.S. winter wheat crop continued to get underway. 

Nationally, 8% of the winter wheat crop had been planted as of Monday, up from 2% a week earlier but behind both the 10% planted at the same point last year and the five-year average of 12%. 

Kansas had 4% of its crop planted, compared with a five-year average of 6%. No measurable planting progress was reported in Oklahoma, where the five-year average for this point in the season is 7%. Texas planting reached 12%, up from 4% a week earlier and just behind the five-year average of 13%. 

No winter wheat planting progress was reported in Michigan or Ohio. Michigan typically has about 4% of its crop planted by this point, while USDA lists no five-year average planting progress for Ohio as of mid-September.
