U.S. Winter Wheat Crop Rated 44% Good to Excellent

The USDA's first condition rating for the 2027 U.S. winter wheat crop shows 44% of the crop in good to excellent condition, slightly below the first rating issued for the previous year's crop.

According to Monday's weekly crop progress report, 38% of the winter wheat crop was rated good and 6% excellent as of Sunday. Another 38% was rated fair, while 13% was poor and 5% very poor.

A direct year-earlier comparison is unavailable because last year's U.S. government shutdown interrupted weekly crop progress reports between Sept. 29 and Nov. 17, 2025. The first condition rating for the 2026 winter wheat crop, released Nov. 17, put the national crop at 45% good to excellent condition.

Among the major Hard Red Winter wheat states, Kansas reported 47% of its 2027 winter wheat crop in good to excellent condition as of Sunday. Oklahoma's crop was rated well above the national average at 72% good to excellent.

In the Soft Red Winter wheat region, Michigan reported 65% of its crop in good to excellent condition, while Ohio was at 68% good to excellent.

Meanwhile, winter wheat planting across the U.S. reached 83% complete as of Nov. 1, up seven percentage points from 76% the previous week and just behind the five-year average of 84%.

Kansas planting advanced six points to 86%, compared with the five-year average of 87%. Oklahoma climbed 11 points to 62%, well behind its average of 79%.

Michigan planting reached 84%, up from 75% the previous week and slightly ahead of its average of 83%. Ohio jumped 20 points to 88%, also ahead of its five-year average of 86%.

Nationally, winter wheat emergence advanced 12 points to 65%, matching the five-year average.

In Kansas, 66% of the crop had emerged, up from 48% the previous week but two points behind average. Oklahoma emergence climbed from 32% to 41%, well below its average of 59%.

Michigan emergence reached 74%, up from 61% and ahead of its average of 70%. Ohio advanced 20 points to 68%, compared with its five-year average of 64%.
