The US corn and soybean harvests made just modest progress this past week but are still progressing at the average pace.
Monday’s USDA crop progress showed the American corn harvest at 11% complete as of Sunday, up 4 points from the previous week. That’s 2 points behind a year earlier but even with the five-year average. Meanwhile, an estimated 9% of the national soybean crop was in the bin as of Sunday, also up 4 points on the week and compared to 12% last year and 9% on average.
In the largest production state of Iowa, the corn harvest advanced 5 points on the week to 8% complete as of Sunday, 3 points ahead of last year and the state average. The Illinois harvest gained 7 points to 12% done, 3 points ahead of average but a single point behind last year. The Indiana corn harvest was 10% complete as of Sunday, versus 6% a week earlier, 11% last year and 7% on average.
No corn harvest progress was reported in Michigan, compared to 3% complete last year and 2% on average. The Ohio corn harvest advanced 5 points to 6% done, 3 points ahead of average but 3 points behind last year. The corn harvest had not yet started in North Dakota as of Sunday.
For soybeans, 9% of the Illinois crop was off as of Sunday, up 6 points on the week and 4 points ahead of average. Iowa was just 4% done, up 3 points on the week, and behind 8% last year and 7% on average. The Indiana soy harvest gained 9 points to 12% complete, behind 15% last year but ahead of 7% on average.
Only 1% of the Michigan soy crop was in the bin as of Sunday, 7 points behind last year and 4 points behind average. On the other hand, the Ohio soy harvest was already 10% complete, 6 points ahead of the state average but still behind 13% last year. An estimated 1% of the North Dakota soy crop was off, versus 7% last year and 9% on average.
More than half (56%) of the US corn crop was mature as of Sunday, up from 41% a week earlier and 3 points behind both last year and the average.
The national soybean crop was 61% dropping leaves, up 20 points on the week and close to 62% last year and 60% on average.
The US corn crop was rated 66% good to excellent as of Sunday, down 1 point on the week and 1 point above last year. The condition of the soybean crop slipped 2 points from the previous week to 61% good to excellent, 3 points below last year.
