US Corn, Soy Planting Remains Ahead of Average Pace 


US corn and soybean planting remained ahead of the average pace and generally in line with trade expectations this past week. 

Monday’s weekly USDA crop progress report showed nationwide corn planting at 12% complete as of Sunday, up 6 points from a week earlier and 2 points ahead of the five-year average. Last year at this time, an identical 12% of the crop was in the ground.  

As for soybeans, 8% of the US crop was in as of Sunday. That is a gain of 5 points on the week, 4 points ahead of the average and on par with last year. 

Going into today’s report, the average trade guess had national corn planting at 12% complete and soybeans at 7% done. 

Corn planting in the top production state of Iowa advanced 9 points on the week to reach 13% complete as of Sunday, ahead of 9% last year and 8% on average. The Illinois crop was 11% planted, versus 3% a week earlier, 16% last year and 10% on average, while Indiana planting was up just 1 point on the week to 2% complete, 3 points behind average. 

An estimated 1% of the Michigan corn crop was in the ground, steady with last year and the state average. No corn planting was yet reported in Ohio, compared to 4% last year and 2% on average. 

Soybean planting in Illinois advanced 7 points from a week earlier to 11% complete as of Sunday, 1 point behind last year but ahead of 6% on average. The Iowa crop was 8% planted, up 6 points on the week and 6 points ahead of average. Just 2% of the Indiana crop was in the ground, behind 6% last year and 3% on average. 

The Michigan soybean crop was 1% planted, behind 2% last year but even with the state average. No soy planting was reported in Ohio, compared to 4% last year and 2% on average. 

Across the country, 3% of the corn crop had emerged as of Sunday, 1 point ahead of last year and the average.
