Almost half of the 2024 US spring wheat crop is already in the ground.
Planting of the crop reached 47% complete as of Sunday, according to Monday’s USDA crop progress report. That is up 13 points on the week and well ahead of just 21% last year and 31% on average.
At 32% complete, planting in the No. 1 production state of North Dakota advanced 12 points from the previous week and topped 9% last year and 20% on average. Minnesota planting gained only 3 points on the week, but at 51% complete was still miles ahead of 5% last year and 25% on average. The Montana crop was 52% planted, compared to 35% a week earlier, 26% last year and 36% on average, while South Dakota was 79% finished as of Sunday, up from 62% the previous week and ahead of 45% and 54% for last year and the five-year average.
Nationally, 12% of the spring wheat crop had emerged as of Sunday, up 7 points from a week earlier and ahead of 4% last year and 9% on average.
At 31%, spring wheat emergence in South Dakota was 10 points ahead of the state average, while Minnesota emergence was also 10 points ahead at 18%.
The North Dakota and Montana crops were 5% and 3% emerged, respectively, compared to 3% and 8% on average.
