While Canadian farmers added substantially to their earlier canola intentions, they cut back on wheat compared with March.
Statistics Canada’s June acreage report on Tuesday estimated total 2026 national wheat area at 25.33 million acres, down from the federal agency's March estimate of 26.738 million. The latest figure was also 5.9% below the 26.925 million acres seeded in 2025 and landed slightly below the low end of pre-report trade expectations ranging from 25.5 million to 26.75 million acres.
The largest national adjustment was in spring wheat. Farmers reported planting 18.067 million acres, approximately 714,000 acres, or 3.8%, below the March estimate of 18.781 million and 3.9% below last year.
Durum area fell to 5.86 million acres, down about 517,000 acres, or 8.1%, from 6.377 million in March and 10.3% below 2025. Winter wheat area remaining was estimated at 1.403 million acres, 11.5% lower than last year.
Saskatchewan producers planted 13.204 million acres of wheat, down nearly 681,000 acres, or 4.9%, from March intentions and 5.8% from the 14.023 million acres seeded in 2025. Spring wheat fell 2.5% from March and 3.1% year-over-year to 8.503 million acres. Durum dropped 9.1% from both March and last year to 4.652 million acres.
Alberta wheat area was revised to 7.638 million acres, down 440,000 acres, or 5.4%, from March and 5.2% from 2025. Spring wheat declined to 6.388 million acres, 5.5% below the March estimate and 2.1% below last year. Durum fell to 1.101 million acres, down 6% from March and 17.1% from 2025.
Manitoba farmers planted 3.026 million acres of wheat, 3.6% below March intentions and 8.5% below last year.
Ontario farmers reported 1.208 million acres of wheat, down 5% from 2025. Winter wheat fell 6.3% from both March and last year to 1.050 million acres, while spring wheat rose sharply from the March estimate to 61,600 acres but remained 1.9% below 2025.
