Syngenta Canada Inc. is launching Opello®, a new liquid, soil-applied insecticide for corn growers that controls corn rootworm.
Added easily to liquid starter fertilizer and applied in-furrow at planting, Opello helps defend the crop from the roots up, protecting root development, yield and standability.
“Opello is designed and specially formulated to fit into the way growers already plant corn,” says Laura Smith, technical lead for insecticides and herbicides with Syngenta Canada. “Its liquid formulation is compatible with a broad range of liquid starter fertilizers, made to fit smoothly into your planting routine, with a quick and simple tank addition.”
For Jack McTiernan, product lead for fungicides and insecticides with Syngenta Canada, it is the practical outcomes that matter most. “By reducing injury caused by corn rootworm, Opello protects the plant’s ability to uptake nutrients and improves standability, which protects yield and makes harvesting easier.”
In Ontario trials, Opello delivered a 6 bu/ac yield benefit1 and showed a 64% reduction in root injury2 compared to the untreated check without in-furrow insecticide, using the corn rootworm node injury scale.
Opello is powered by PLINAZOLIN® technology, a novel Group 30 insecticide that works through contact and ingestion activity to stop feeding quickly. With no known cross-resistance to other established chemistries or technologies, it complements corn rootworm resistance management strategies like corn seed traits.
“Corn rootworm remains a damaging pest and history tells us it requires more than one management approach when corn is grown consecutively,” says Smith. “Opello can complement existing trait options and crop rotation, helping growers strengthen their resistance management strategy for long-term success.”
Opello will be available for the 2027 growing season in a case of 2 x 10 L, treating 133 acres per case when used at the common rate (150 mL/ac). Opello is also registered to control wireworms.
