The Alberta harvest sailed past the halfway mark this past week, with farmers making good progress amid much improved weather.
Friday’s weekly crop report showed the harvest of major crops in the province (spring wheat, oats, barley, canola, and peas) at 60% complete as of Tuesday, way up from 39% a week earlier. However, the harvest continues to lag the five- and 10-year averages of 86% and 68%.
The South remained the most advanced region at 77% harvested, up 14 points from the previous week. Central Alberta reached 68%, up 25 points, while the North East also gained 25 points to 53%. The North West advanced 17 points to 46%, and the Peace Region climbed 22 points to 45%.
Among individual crops, dry pea harvest was nearly complete at 97%, up 6 points on the week. Barley reached 79%, an 18-point increase, while spring wheat jumped 30 points to 73%. Canola harvest remained less advanced at 31%, although that was up 16 points from the previous week. Another 36% of the canola crop was reported as swathed.
Warm fall weather also helped dry soils across most of Alberta, except for the North East. Provincial surface soil moisture was rated 68% good to excellent, down 6 points from the previous week. Regional ratings ranged from 57% good to excellent in Central Alberta to 89% in the Peace.
Fall-seeded crops were rated 75% good to excellent provincially, well above both the five-year average of 45% and the 10-year average of 57%.
Regional fall-crop ratings were strongest in the North West at 93% good to excellent and the South at 88%, followed by the Peace at 67%, Central at 64% and the North East at 47%.
