Farmer deliveries of major grains increased in January compared to a month earlier but still fell below a year earlier.
According to Statistics Canada report this week, total farmer deliveries of major grains in January amounted to 5.753 million tonnes, up almost 1 million from December although 11.6% below January 2025. Major grains include wheat (excluding durum), durum wheat, oats, barley, rye, flaxseed and canola.
At 1.925 million tonnes, January canola deliveries increased 22.7% from December but remained almost 12% below the same month last year. Wheat (excl durum) deliveries for January were reported at 2.246 million tonnes, up 15.1% from last month but down 20.6% from the previous year, while durum deliveries, at 697,988 tonnes, were up 23.6% from December and down from 784,388 last year.
January barley deliveries were reported at 614,278 tonnes, well above 438,735 in December and 386,348 last year. January oat deliveries of 235,519 tonnes were up 12% on the month but 18.4% below a year ago.
Saskatchewan accounted for more than half (60.5%) of all deliveries, while Alberta accounted for 26.3% and Manitoba accounted for 10.1%.
Producer deliveries capture grain that is destined for a primary elevator, feed mill, crushing plant or flour mill. This includes grain elevators that hold grain before it is exported, as well as shipments to US markets that are not licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission.
