Manitoba Harvest Still Less than Half Complete 

Manitoba’s harvest advanced only modestly over the past week as widespread rainfall continued to restrict fieldwork and raise concerns about crop quality. 

Tuesday’s weekly crop report showed the provincewide harvest at 43% complete as of Monday, up from 40% a week earlier. Progress varied sharply by region, with the Central region furthest along at 64%, followed by Eastern at 62%, Interlake at 56%, Southwest at 27% and Northwest at 24%. 

Canola harvest made some of the strongest gains, reaching 43% complete provincially from 36% a week earlier. Spring wheat edged up to 71% from 70%, while oats advanced to 66% from 65%. Barley remained 76% complete and field peas held at 96%. 

Rainfall was widespread, with most areas receiving more than 8 mm. Parts of the Southwest, Northwest and areas near the southern edge of Lake Winnipeg received more than 30 mm, while Miniota recorded the highest weekly total at 77.8 mm. Wet conditions have contributed to lodging, sprouting and weathering in some crops, particularly later-harvested cereals. 

Southwest 

• Regional harvest remained at 27%, with little progress because of rain, wet fields and heavy morning dew.  

• Spring wheat is about 45% complete, with average to above-average yields, although quality is declining in later fields.  

• Barley is 70% complete and oats 50%, with sprouting, low test weight and feed-grade downgrades becoming more common.  

• Canola remains below 25% complete, with lodging making harvest difficult.  

• Winter cereals and field peas are complete, with generally good quality.  

• Standing and swathed crops are sprouting in some areas.  

Northwest 

• Regional harvest improved to 24% from 19%.  

• Spring wheat reached 50% complete, up from 45%, with yields ranging from slightly below to above average.  

• Canola advanced to 10% from 5%, with below-average to average yields.  

• Field pea harvest remains about 75% complete.  

• Wet low areas and heavy dews continue to limit harvest windows.  

• Sprouting is occurring in both standing and swathed crops.  

Central 

• Regional harvest advanced to 64% from 59%.  

• Spring wheat is 98% complete, while barley is also 98% and oats 96%.  

• Canola reached about 75% complete, up from 60% a week earlier.  

• Pea harvest is finished, while soybean harvest has begun on limited acres.  

• Quality issues include lodging, pre-harvest sprouting and lower oat test weights.  

• Excess September rainfall around Portage la Prairie continues to delay fieldwork.  

Eastern 

• Regional harvest held at 62% as rainfall sharply limited field activity.  

• Spring wheat and oats are both about 95% complete, with barley at 90%.  

• Canola remains 75% complete, with below-average to average yields.  

• Soybean harvest has started on early fields and is about 1% complete.  

• Most corn is in the dent stage, with the milk line roughly 75% down the kernel.  

• Producers continue to report wet field conditions and limited drying opportunities.  

Interlake 

• Regional harvest advanced to 56% from 47%.  

• Spring wheat is 92% complete, while barley and oats are each 90%.  

• Canola harvest reached 45%, up from 35% a week earlier.  

• Pea harvest is nearly complete, with slightly above-average yields reported.  

• Strong winds and rain have caused lodging and some yield losses.  

• Soybeans are mostly at R7 to R8 and harvest could begin if weather improves.
