Map: Alberta Battered by Heavy Rain

Heavy rainfall that began over the weekend across central and southern Alberta is bringing much-needed moisture to dry farmland, but it is also creating new challenges for producers racing to complete seeding operations.

In some regions, rainfall totals have already reached levels more typical of an entire month, raising concerns about flooding, soil erosion, and prolonged delays to fieldwork.

The map below shows just how concentrated the moisture has been across the province. The heaviest accumulations stretch all the way from the U.S. border north toward Edmonton. The rainfall pattern stands in stark contrast to much drier conditions across portions of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

According to published reports, saturated soils and muddy field conditions have left some producers unable to access fields, while standing water and temporary overland flooding have halted operations in some of the hardest-hit areas. Farmers already facing delays from a wet spring are now confronting additional setbacks as precipitation continues.

Forecasters say another 50 to 100 millimetres of rain could fall in parts of Alberta by midweek.

According to World Weather Inc., rain and thunderstorms are expected to persist across much of the Prairies through next week, with Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan facing the heaviest rainfall, widespread storm activity and the risk of severe weather, including hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. Meanwhile, Alberta is expected to see lighter and more scattered precipitation, although gusty winds of 50 km/h or higher could affect field conditions across much of the region.
