Total Canadian wheat stocks as of March 31 were the heaviest in more than a decade.
According to a Statistics Canada grain stocks report Wednesday, total national wheat stockpiles as of the end of March hit 19.473 million tonnes. That is up 12% from a year earlier and the highest March 31 stocks level since 2014 at 22.408 million.
Durum stocks amounted to 3.417 million tonnes, up 19.1% on the year and the largest March 31 stocks level since 2019 at 4.158 million. Wheat (excl durum) stocks as of March 31 were tallied at 16.056 million tonnes, up 10.6% from the previous year and the highest for the date since 2014 at 18.431 million.
Total on-farm stocks of all wheat as of March 31 were up 14.1% at 15.18 million tonnes, while commercial stocks increased 5.3% to 4.293 million. On-farm durum stocks as of March 31 were reported at 2.486 million tonnes, compared to 2.113 million a year earlier.
Off-farm wheat deliveries to March 31 rose 3.7% to 25.7 million tonnes, StatsCan said. Total wheat exports rose 2.7% to 18.9 million tonnes, a record for the period, on continued strong global demand, it added.
On-farm all wheat stocks in Saskatchewan as of March 31 were reported at 6.047 million tonnes, little changed from 6.034 million the previous year. On-farm durum stocks in the province were 1.68 million tonnes, up modestly from 1.578 million last year.
Alberta on-farm all wheat stocks as of March 31 were reported at 6.176 million tonnes, up nearly 39% on the year. On-farm durum stocks in the province were up 40.2% to 714,000 tonnes.
At 2.634 million tonnes, on-farm all wheat stocks in Manitoba were up 10.8% from last year.
On-farm all wheat stocks in Ontario as of March 31 came in at 146,000 tonnes, down from 261,000 a year earlier.
