Rapid Progress for US Corn, Soy Planting  


US corn and soybean planting advanced rapidly this past week, with producers in most production states making notable strides 

Monday’s weekly USDA crop progress report showed nationwide corn planting at 40% complete as of Sunday, up 16 points on the week and matching pre-report trade expectations. Meanwhile, soy planting gained 12 points on the week to 30% complete, a single point ahead of the average trade guess. 

Corn planting was also 5 points ahead of last year and 1 point ahead of the five-year average as of Sunday, while soybeans were 6 and 7 points ahead of last year and the average, respectively. 

In Iowa, almost half (49%) of this year’s corn crop was in the ground as of Sunday, up 15 points from a week earlier although still 4 points behind the average. Soybean planting in the state was 38% complete, compared to 25% the previous week and 34% on average. 

The Illinois corn crop was 32% planted as of Sunday, up from 16% a week earlier but also behind the average of 44%. The soybean crop in the state reached one-third planted, a gain of 11 points from a week earlier and a single point behind average. The Indiana corn and soybean crops were 26% and 25% planted as of Sunday, versus 10% for both a week earlier and 25% and 20% on average. 

Michigan corn planting advanced 17 points from a week earlier to 23% complete, well ahead of 14% on average, while soybean planting in the state gained 12 points to 20% complete, 5 points ahead of average.  

An estimated 22% of the Ohio corn crop was planted, up from 8% the previous week and 15% on average, with soybean planting already 23% done, compared to 10% a week earlier and 13% on average. 

Producers in North Dakota had 17% of that state’s corn planted as of Sunday, up 10 points on the week and 10 points ahead of average. North Dakota soybean planting advanced 8 points to 10% done, ahead of just 2% on average. 

Across the country, 11% of the corn crop had emerged as of Sunday, up from 5% a week earlier and 2 points ahead of average. National soybean emergence was also running 2 points ahead of average at 7%.
