The Saskatchewan government has appointed a new Farmland Ownership Advisory Committee to gather stakeholder feedback and recommend updates aimed at strengthening the province’s farmland ownership legislation.
Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison said in a release Monday the committee will consult with key industry stakeholders through October and November before submitting a summary of feedback to the provincial government for review.
“Our government wants to ensure that legislation meets the needs of Saskatchewan farmland owners,” Harrison said. “This committee’s work will help inform the decisions we make regarding farmland ownership in our province.”
The three-member committee will include Ken McDonald as chairperson, alongside Deron Kuski and Curt Chickoski.
Saskatchewan farmland is considered one of the province’s most valuable resources. The existing ownership framework falls under The Saskatchewan Farm Security Act and The Saskatchewan Farm Security Regulations, which outline eligibility criteria for land ownership, the release said.
The Farmland Security Board will continue to independently monitor and enforce the legislation, ensuring compliance with ownership rules that restrict land acquisition to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and fully Canadian-owned private corporations.
