For the first time, Cereals Canada will include both Western and Eastern wheat classes in its annual Harvest Assessment Program, thanks to a new partnership with Grain Farmers of Ontario.
The expanded effort marks a significant step in providing a comprehensive, national view of Canadian wheat quality, said a Cereals Canada release on Thursday.
Winnipeg-based Cereals Canada has long been recognized as the independent global authority on Western Canadian wheat quality, processing, and milling technology. By incorporating Eastern Canadian wheat, the program aims to strengthen Canada’s reputation as a premier wheat supplier worldwide, the release added.
“Cereals Canada is the trusted source for quality information on Western Canadian wheat, and our technical experts understand the data needed to support our domestic and global markets,” said Dean Dias, chief executive officer at Cereals Canada. “Our partnership with Grain Farmers of Ontario brings that same level of expertise to Eastern Canadian wheat. This united, comprehensive approach will help to strengthen Canada’s global position as a premier wheat supplier.”
Each year, Cereals Canada collects representative samples from exporters to analyze four Western wheat classes: Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS), Canada Western Amber Durum (CWAD), Canada Prairie Spring Red (CPSR), and Canada Western Red Winter (CWRW). The 2025 program will add four Eastern classes, including Canada Eastern Soft Red Winter (CESRW), with samples provided through Grain Farmers of Ontario’s annual survey.
Composite samples from the 2025 harvest will be evaluated for milling performance, flour and semolina quality, and end-product functionality. Depending on the class of wheat, products such as bread, pasta, noodles, and cookies will be produced and tested at Cereals Canada’s technical labs.
The findings will form the basis of the 2025 New Wheat Crop Report, to be released on November 18, 2025. Available at cerealscanada.ca, the report provides detailed insight into the milling and processing performance of Canadian wheat for both domestic and global customers.
Additional assessments of Canada Eastern Hard Red Winter (CEHRW), Canada Eastern Red Spring (CERS), and Canada Eastern Soft White Winter (CESWW) will also be available upon request.
While Cereals Canada’s Western work continues to receive partial funding from the federal government, the Eastern wheat assessments are supported by Grain Farmers of Ontario.
