Farmer Deliveries of Major Grains Slow in October

Canadian farmer deliveries of major grains cooled off in October, following a near-record September.

Statistics Canada on Tuesday reported total October deliveries of major grains at 6.567 million tonnes, down about 768,500 or 10.5% from 7.335 million in September. The September total was the second highest on record for the month.

Compared to the same month a year earlier, October deliveries were little changed, easing just 0.01%.

October canola deliveries amounted to 2.05 million tonnes, up slightly from 1.927 million in September but down from 2.292 million a year earlier. At 3.005 million tonnes, wheat (excl durum) deliveries were down 13.2% from September but up 14.6% from October 2024.

Durum deliveries in October were 677,737 tonnes, versus 649,500 in September and 814,437 the previous year. Barley deliveries were down sharply in October compared to September, falling 38.7% to 522,210 – also below 544,942 last year.

Oat deliveries for October came in at 244,347 tonnes, down from 393,764 in September and a bit below 255,813 a year ago.

Producer deliveries capture grain that is destined for a primary elevator, feed mill, crushing plant or flour mill. This includes grain elevators that hold grain before it is exported, as well as shipments to US markets that are not licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission.

The imposition of tariffs by the United States may have an impact on producer deliveries of major grains in the coming months, StatsCan said. In 2024, Canada exported a total of 4.5 million tonnes of wheat (excluding durum), durum wheat, oats, barley, rye, flaxseed and canola to the US.

Major grains include wheat (excluding durum), durum wheat, oats, barley, rye, flaxseed and canola
