Slow Progress for US Spring Wheat Harvest; Winter Wheat Harvest 86% Done 


There was little US spring wheat harvest progress this past week, while the winter wheat harvest moved closer to completion. 

According to Monday’s USDA crop progress report, 5% of the American spring wheat crop was in the bin as of Sunday, up just 4 points from a week earlier. That matches the year-earlier pace but trails the five-year average of 9% done. Meanwhile, the winter wheat harvest advanced 6 points on the week to 86% complete as of Sunday, a single point behind both last year and the average. 

In the largest spring wheat state of North Dakota, the harvest was 1% done as of Sunday, on par with last year but 2 points behind average. The Minnesota harvest was 5% complete, versus 3% last year and 13% on average, while Montana was 4% done, 1 point behind last year and 7 points behind the state average. 

The South Dakota spring wheat harvest advanced 13 points on the week to reach 23% complete as of Sunday, still behind 35% last year and 40% on average. 

The American spring wheat crop was 95% headed as of Sunday, up 3 points from a week earlier and behind 97% last year and 98% on average. 

At 48% good to excellent as of Sunday, the national spring wheat condition rating was down 1 point the previous week and far below 74% last year. 

For winter wheat, the harvest in the Soft Red state of Michigan advanced 16 points from a week earlier to 89% complete as of Sunday, behind 95% last year but on par with the five-year state average. The Ohio harvest gained 3 points to reach 100% done, in line with last year and the average.
