Alberta seeding is virtually complete and early crop development is ahead of average, but dryness in the province worsened this past week.
Friday’s crop report pegged seeding across the province at 99% done as of Tuesday, slightly ahead of the five- and 10-year averages of 96%. Meanwhile, an estimated 83% of all crops had emerged as of Tuesday, well ahead of 66% for the five-year average.
However, the report noted that both surface and sub-surface soil moisture conditions have continued to decline across the province amid limited precipitation, with current moisture conditions similar to those experienced in 2022 and 2023. As seen in those previous years, June rains can result in “significant improvements to soil moisture,” the report said.
Alberta yields generally ended up above average in 2022 but fell below average in 2023.
Provincewide surface soil moisture was rated 42% good to excellent as of Tuesday, down from 56% the previous week and below the five- and 10-year averages of 62% and 59%, respectively. Surface soil moisture ranged from a low of 32% good to excellent in the Peace Region, to a high of 57% in the Central Region.
